Hi there! My name is Rebecca, and I am a beekeeper. I have a myriad of other hobbies but have developed a passion for pollinators, especially honeybees.
I discovered beekeeping back in 2011 and to my knowledge am the only one in my family who has ever kept bees. My husband's grandfather was a beekeeper for many years, and we bonded over bees.
My journey into beekeeping hasn't been an easy one, but I have come a long way since I dove in "feet first" back in 2011 and have learned so much! Can you imagine handling and managing a box of 60,000 stinging insects that produce products that you can eat?
One of the most common questions I get asked when someone finds out that I'm a beekeeper is "have you ever gotten stung?" I lost count how many times I've gotten stung over the years. I don't get stung near as much as anymore as I've learned to be gentle with what I do within the hives and know when the best times are to go in. That's not saying that I don't get chased across the yard periodically by one of the bees who didn't like something about my presence though.
I'm a native of North Carolina and love to travel. I have met beekeepers from many parts of the US as well as overseas. I really enjoy learning about different techniques that others use in their beekeeping practices as it helps me better adapt to keeping my own bees.
The most amount of hives I've ever had at one time has been 8. I've found that 5 hives is the ideal number for me and what I can manage solo. My husband helps me when he can but has a healthy respect for the bees and keeps his distance as much as possible. I'm really proud of him for his progress in working with the bees, he caught his first swarm this past week!
